History

The history of Papaya

Papaya is a fruit hybrid from Nirvana Seeds, the Dutch seed company founded in 1995, which Leafly says bred it as its take on a Mango strain; SeedFinder separates a legacy line from a feminized version Nirvana released around 2022.1,2,3,4 A clone-only cut held by Oni Seed Co became the parent of more than a hundred recorded crosses, and in 2025 Papaya was California’s second best-selling concentrate cultivar.5,6

Timeline

  1. Late 1970sSkunk #1 first blooms; Leafly says Nirvana Seeds was among the companies that later grew variations of it, and SeedFinder names it as a parent of the legacy Papaya.3,7
  2. 1995Nirvana Shop is officially founded in the Netherlands; its founder, Mau, started out at Positronic Seeds, a Dutch seed bank.1
  3. 1998Nirvana’s description of Ice, a parent in the Citral × Ice account, says it won that year’s Cannabis Cup; the text SeedFinder carries puts a question mark after the claim.8
  4. 2004Citral, the other parent in that account, takes second place in the hydro coffeeshop category of the Highlife Cup, according to SeedFinder.9
  5. Jun 2017The earliest dated Papaya flower test in our lab dataset, from Massachusetts.10
  6. Sep 2018The earliest dated test of Papaya Punch, the Papaya × Purple Punch cross, in the same dataset.10,11
  7. Around 2022Nirvana releases a new feminized Papaya bred from Citral × Ice; SeedFinder lists the older line, Jack Herer × Skunk #1, as the legacy Papaya.3,4
  8. 2022Papaya Bomb, Purple City Genetics’ Papaya × THC Bomb cross from its El Krem Collection, places second in the Emerald Cup’s solventless concentrate category, according to Leafly.12

Why it spread

It smells like its name. Leafly says Nirvana met its own challenge with a Papaya that smells uncannily like the fruit, and Weedmaps opens its description with ripe papaya, mango and sweet tropical fruit.2,15

Breeders adopted one cut. SeedFinder records 106 direct descendants of Oni Seed Co’s clone-only Papaya, from breeders including Humboldt Seed Company, Atlas Seed and Cannarado Genetics, and Leafly lists Papaya Punch and Papaya Bomb as its children.2,5

Concentrate makers took it up. Weedmaps calls the Citral #13 × Ice #2 version the one circulating in solventless circles, Nirvana says its current seed can produce cup-winning fresh-frozen bubble hash and dry sift (a seller’s claim), and Papaya was California’s second best-selling concentrate cultivar in January–November 2025.4,6,15

The disputed parts of the story

  • Lineage: Citral #13 × Ice #2 (Leafly, AllBud, Nirvana’s current seed) or Jack Herer × Skunk #1 (SeedFinder’s legacy entry, Crop King); Weedmaps lists both (see genetics).2,3,15,16,17,18
  • Dates: SeedFinder dates the Citral × Ice feminized release to around 2022, while Leafly and AllBud describe a Citral #13 × Ice #2 Papaya without dating it, so it is not settled which lineage came first.2,4,16
  • Effects: the legacy line is described as almost narcotic and couch-locking, the current seed as a clear, focused daytime strain.3,4
  • Flowering: SeedFinder’s data give the legacy line about 56 days, while the breeder description it carries says 9/11 weeks.3
  • Names: two different strains are sold as Papaya Juice, one from Satori Vermont (Papaya × GMO) and one from 808 Genetics.3,19
